What are the LOCOS Rankings?
The Tennis LOCOS Rankings are LOCOS’s “historical objective merit-based method” used for determining the best players, both singles and doubles, in the Springs. All ages, all levels, all comers. Tennis is tennis. Rankings are updated every month or so.
What is the ranking structure and formula?
Player rankings are based on our dynamic Player Rating (PR) system. Players are ranked in order from highest rating to lowest rating.
A player’s rating is initially set based on their LOCOS salary. A player signed for $28,324,000 starts at a rating of 2832. A player signed for $4,444,444 starts at a rating of 444. Whenever a player plays an official League match, rating points are gained or lost depending on the result.
The amount of points gained or lost also depends on the level of competition. A player who beats a player with a much lower rating will gain only a few points. A player who beats a player with a higher rating will gain a lot of points; the higher rated player, in turn, will lose a lot of points. For example, if a player at $16,000,000 (LOCOS salary)/1600 (PR) beats a player at $28,000,000 (LOCOS salary)/2800 (PR), the 1600 rated player would gain 300 points and the 2800 rated player would lose 300 points. Each player’s new rating would be 1900 and 2500, respectively. All of this is calculated based on the Elo rating system, the same system used to rate chess masters. After all, as Robin Williams once said, “Tennis is like chess at 90 miles an hour!”
How can I improve my ranking?
(1) Win your League matches. (2) Don’t lose your League matches. (3) Win your League matches against higher-ranked opponents. Knock them down, knock yourself up. (4) Don’t lose League matches against lower-ranked players. Keep those little guys down, where they belong!
Unlike in chess where players play multiple games every day, League tennis matches are fewer and sometimes far between. Accordingly, whereas a chess player’s rating is not significantly affected by one win or loss, in our League every match is high stakes. The standard k-factor, or development coefficient, for calculating Elo ratings in chess is around 20-40. We’re rolling with a k-factor of 300. That’s a lot of k. It means: ratings/rankings are can change precipitously. More drama, more intrigue, more excitement!
Where can I check doubles rankings? Women's rankings?
Doubles rankings will be updated and posted every other month. Women’s rankings TBD.
